Many people know the feeling of chapped and cracked skin on their hands. Especially in winter with icy temperatures and dry heating air, the skin on our hands needs more intensive care.
The cold causes the talc glands in our skin to produce fewer lipids. As a result, the protective acid mantle of the skin does not build up as well. The skin becomes flaky, brittle and in extreme cases even cracked. Itching and burning on the hands are also not uncommon.
We have 4 tips against dry and chapped skin on the hands:
The right skin care:
In winter, the skin needs richer hand creams. The drier the skin, the more oil the cream should contain. Since you can't use greasy hands during the day, you should make sure that the skin cream is absorbed well. Hand creams with an anti-ageing effect are particularly suitable for this purpose, as they contain rich oils that provide sufficient moisture.
Apply cream regularly:
Once you have found a good hand cream, you should apply it regularly during the day and also at night, especially if the skin on your hands is tight or dry. Don't forget the back of your hands and the spaces between your fingers, because this is where dry spots show up the most.
Do not wash your hands too often:
Washing your hands thoroughly prevents infections, but handwashing soap also removes important oils from the skin. The use of hot water also increases this effect. Instead, use a moisturising disinfectant. For dirty hands, use a pH-neutral soap or hand washing oil with lukewarm water.
Protect the skin:
Of course, we can also make sure that our hands are better protected by not stressing the skin too much. Wear warm gloves in colder temperatures and be sure to use protective gloves when handling cleaning agents in the household.
